At five minutes to midnight, I took the train on the outskirts of Tokyo. There were only me and a few other people in the carriage when a man entered. He looked around the carriage and as soon as the doors closed, his face was convulsed with horror. He approached a girl. – Excuse me, ma’am, are you 28 years old? – Yes! – she replied – How did you guess? He ignored her question and moved on to the man sitting next to him. – And you... are you 45? – Yes, right! He looked at me. – And you’re 35. – That’s right, but how do you know? – And you, miss, are you 50? – Yes, exactly, but tomorrow I’ll be 51... or rather, in 5 minutes. When she said that, the man’s face turned white as a sheet. Why?
